Grassroots Environmental Champions Receive the Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award 2026 from Rotary Club of Madras East
Chennai, August 5, 2026: The Rotary Club of Madras East (RI District 3234), in association with CavinKare Private Limited, today presented the Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection 2026. The awards celebrate individuals whose work embodies the late Dr. M.S. Swaminathan’s vision of sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment.
This year’s awardees are Ms. P. Pechiyammal, Leader of the Neithal Self Help Group, Vedhalai, Ramanathapuram, and Ms. Govindhammal, former Director of the Nallavur Farmer Producer Company Limited, Villupuram.
Ms. Pechiyammal has pioneered community-led conservation of the Gulf of Mannar through innovative ghost gear recovery and marine waste management, while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal women and promoting participatory coastal governance.
Ms. Govindhammal has transformed the lives of thousands of smallholder farmers by championing sustainable agriculture, restoring natural resources, strengthening farmer producer organisations, and empowering rural women through leadership, value addition, and climate-resilient farming practices.
The awards were presented by Dr. Virendra Tiwari, Chairman, National Biodiversity Authority, in the presence of Rtn. D. Suresh Jain, District Governor, RI District 3234, and Rtn. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.
Instituted by the Rotary Club of Madras East with the support of CavinKare, the awards reaffirm a shared commitment to recognising grassroots environmental leaders whose work demonstrates that sustainable progress is best achieved through empowered communities, ecological responsibility, and inclusive development.
