Chennai, September 2024 – Dr. Mehta’s Hospital, a leading and the most trusted healthcare provider in Chennai has successfully performed a rare and complex surgery to treat a 61-year-old woman diagnosed with a Spontaneous Colovesicle Fistula, a rare condition characterized by an abnormal connection between the large bowel and the urinary bladder. The patient had no prior medical history or underlying diseases, making the case particularly challenging.
The patient, who had been experiencing symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI) for over a year and a half, had visited multiple consultants without an accurate diagnosis. She presented at Dr Mehta’s Hospital with complaints of high-coloured urine and pneumaturia (the presence of gas in urine).
Following a thorough assessment by Dr Vijay, Dr Pavan Arcot and Dr Nabeel Nazeer, it was established that the patient was suffering from Spontaneous colo-vesicle fistula.
After a Multidisciplinary meet involving Dr Rajkumar, HoD, Anesthesia and team, keeping in the view the patient’s age and co-morbid conditions, it was decided to perform the surgery using the latest GI staplers.
Despite the high-level complexity, the surgery was successfully led by Dr. Pavan Arcot, Chief Urologist at Dr Mehta’s Hospital, along with Dr. Nabeel Nazeerm, Deputy Head of the Department of Minimal Access and General Surgery stated, “A delay in diagnosis and corrective surgery would have led to serious life-threatening complications. The early and proactive approach taken by the patient’s attenders was instrumental in the success of the surgery.”
Colo vesical Fistula is one of the common complications of acute diverticulitis, post radiation status, malignancy and recent surgery. However, it is uncommon for a patient to present with a colo-vesical fistula without an underlying disease. The rarity of this case lies in the fact that the patient has spontaneous colo-vesicle fistula with no underlying disease. The successful outcome of this surgery highlights the significant advancements in Urology and GI surgery and the importance of timely medical intervention in managing complex cases.
Dr. Mehta’s Hospital continues to be at the forefront of medical innovation and excellence, offering advanced treatment for complex conditions.
